About this study: This research study collect and archive the speech of Singapore English speakers in an effort to further understanding of this English variety. This research is funded by a British Academy/Leverhulme Small Research Grant to Dr. Adam Chong at Queen Mary University of London. The study will take place online over the internet.
This study has received ethics approval by the Queen Mary Ethics of Research Committee (QMERC20.486). Who can participate in the research? Adults age 21 and over who were born in Singapore, and have not spent more than a year overseas, may participate in this research. You will need access to a computer and smartphone, as well as a quiet space at home, in order to participate.
What is involved in participating in the study? Participation will involve a single data collection session lasting approximately 60 minutes. There are three tasks. In the listening task, participants will be learning new words and asked to recall these by entering their responses directly into the computer. Participants will also take part in a speaking task, reading sentences as part of a dialogue, which will be required to record on your smartphones. You will then fill in a background questionnaire.
Will my participation be anonymous? YES. All data collected will be completely anonymous. Your name will not be associated with the data. If you consent, your anonymized data may also be deposited with a professional linguistic corpus archiving service, so that it may be used by future scholars. This is entirely voluntary.
Where does data collection take place? All data collection will take place entirely online over the internet. So you are able to participate safely from your own homes.
